It wasn't until I was nearly sixty years old that I discovered the importance of values in painting. This
is why I want to stress to my students that once they learn to see darks and lights in their subject
matter, they will see a marked improvement in their work. Value is determined by the light source.
Every object is affected by light. Light sources vary from strong, direct light, multiple light sources,
indirect light, moonlight, and overcast light. Before I start any painting, I find the light source of my
reference. When I am painting outdoors, the light source, the sun is in constant motion, therefore
I paint the shadows quickly and they will determine how I paint my values.
